I am not related to this family line in any way, but thought people posting or reading here might be interested in the following information that she discovered. --------------------------------------------------------- Actress Susan Sarandon was profiled tonight on the TV show "Who Do You Think You Are". She was looking for her grandmother Anita Rigali, who was the daughter of Mansueto Rigali of Tuscany, Italy. Mansueto was one of many sculptors of human statuary in his home community. He and many other family members all sailed to New York City in 1888 to seek a better life in America. Unfortunately, only three of his nine children survived to adulthood because of the crowded tenement they had to live in on the Lower East Side of NYC. His wife also died at a young age - probably because of an illness like tuberculosis. Susan Sarandon's mother thought her mother Anita Rigali had died young, but Anita lived from 1907 to 1984. Anita had become a mother starting at the age of 13 or so, and she was not able to look after her children at such a young age. Susan's mother did meet her mother once - at the New York World's Fair in 1939. Susan Sarandon did travel to Tuscany and traced her Rigali family back to 1640. She traced her grandmother's second marriage to suburban New York and met the nieces of the second husband there. The nieces had no knowledge of Anita's connection to Susan Sarandon, but many people in that neighbourhood knew a lot about Anita's younger life as a showgirl in NYC during the 1930's.
