Amos Riffle of 1850 McKean County

It is likely Amos had 2 wifes, the 1st wife an Unknown Indian women and the 2nd wife Salenia or Saloma.

The 1st wife family lore says was an Unknown Indian women who was from the Tuscarora Nation. She was born about 1782 and she died about 1812, she is said to be buried in the Indian Burying Grounds Cemetery - Town of Tuscarora, NY.
His 2nd wife Salenia or Saloma, has been listed in on a few web sites as born in 1780 in West Troy NY. This is unlikely. A couple of these pages further stated Amos married Salenia in 1816 and list among there children Orrin born 1800. Most indicate Amos Riffle was found in McKean County, PA. None offer an explanation as to why if Salenia married Amos in 1816 she had his son born in 1800.

In an effort to clear up some of the confusing information here are a few facts;

The 1850 Census Record for Norwich, McKean County, Pennsylvania Enumerated Sept. 7th lists;
House visited number 865 persons listed are;
Amos Rifle Age 72 Male farmer born in NY
Saloma Rifle Age 60 Female born VT
Orrin Rifle Age 49 M born NY listed as a person over the age of 29 who cannot read or write, idiotic
Alvira Rifle Age 18 F born PA listed as dumb& idiotic
The census record is very clear and states Saloma/Salenia was age 60 indicating she was born in 1790 not in 1780.
The census record also states Saloma/Salenia was born in Vermont.
Now if the census record is correct Saloma/Salenia would have been just 10 or 11 years old in 1800 when Orrin was born.
A few other facts;
Amos Riffle is listed in the;
1800 United States Federal Census
as Amos Riffle along with one son age 16 and under.
Name: Riffle, Amos
Township: Bath
County: Steuben
State: New York
The listing - 1 boy listed 0 -16 1 man 16-26 John Amos would have been 19 his 1st son would have been an infant.
Orrin was born in New York according to family records his mother stayed with her family for the birth of their first son. According to the family Orrin means Green or Spring and he was said to have been born in early spring.
Another record copied from the originals in the Census Bureau, Washington D.C.
lists Amos Rifle as 1 Free White Male age 16/26 and his son 10 years and under I have included this record as a photo with his wife the Unknown Indian women.
no wife is listed the optional listing are; "Free White Female", "Other Free, except indians, not Taxed", & "Slaves"
If his wife at the time of this census was an Indian women she would not be listed.
Amos Rifle is listed again in the 1810 U.S. Census in Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania
The persons listed were 3 boys (0 to 10) " " 1male (26 to 45) " " " " 1female (26 to 45) under goods""2"""2 stock 2
The indexed name is Riple, Amos however if you look at the original census record it is clearly Amos Rifle

slaves 1 Note; The 5 daughters are listed are; 3 born between 1804-1810 and the 2 others born 1810-1812. This makes a total of 7 children born to the family of Amos Rifle between 1800 and 1812. Also note; the boy listed as "age 0 to 10" is born between 1810 - 1820.It is likely either; Hiram Rifle born 1815 or Amos Rifle born Jun 1817. Orrin born 1800 & John born 1801 are likely the boys listed as "2 age 16 to 26" making them born between1794 - 1804.
In the 1830 census Lawrenceville, Tioga, Pennsylvania, Amos Rifle is indexed as; Amos Rfle the original census record is yet again very clear and the name on the page is Amos Rifle.
The listing; 1 man age 50/60 the boys listed are 1 under 5 years, 1 age 5/10, 1 age 10/15, & 1 age 15/20, girls 1 under 5, and 1 age 10/15. His wife is 40/50 years old. Note; the boys listed here in the 1830 census under the age of 29 can not be Orrin born 1800 or John born 1801. The boy born 1810-1820 & a boy born 1804 1824 these are likely Amos born Jun 1817 & Hiram born 1815.The girls listed here in the 1830 census under the age of 18 can not be the girls born between 1804 and 1812.These girls 1 under age 5, & 1 age 10/15 born 1825 -1830 & born 1815- 1820 are likley Sarah born 1825 & Hannah born about 1824. The girls born between 1830-1835 & born between 1815-1820. The girl born 1830-1835 is likely Alvira Rifle born 1832, daughter of Orrin Rifle in the 1850 census Orrin is living with the family as well listed as a widower.
The girl listed as born between 1815-1820 is likely Hannah born about 1824.

Sarah Rifle married Hiram Wolcott Burlingame
H. W. BURLINGAME, farmer, P.O. Kasson, is a son of Isaac and Sophronia (Wolcott) Burlingame, natives of New York State, who came to McKean county in 1815 with Timothy Wolcott and others, and settled in Norwich township (then Sergeant township) in the year 1816; it was what is known among the old settlers as "the cold season;" the crops were all destroyed, and Isaac Burlingame, in company with Timothy Wolcott, went in a canoe to Pittsburgh for provisions, taking six weeks to make the trip. Isaac Burlingame was one of the party who were pushing a canoe load of potatoes up what is now known as "Potato creek," and tipped the load over in the creek, from which incident the stream derived its name. H.W. Burlingame was born in Sergeant township, McKean Co., Penn., March 3, 1818, on the old farm now owned by George Burdick. His father was a mason by trade, and H.W. worked with him until February 26, 1841, when he married Miss Sally Rifle, a daughter of Amos Rifle, of Norwich township, and then began life for himself. They reared a family of four children, viz.: H.L., living in Smethport; Wilbur, died in the Civil war; Amanda, wife of James Barnes, of Michigan, and Arabella C., wife of Lucas Wilson, of Ludington, Mich. Mr. Burlingame, after his marriage, resided in Norwich township until 1848, when he sold out and came to Hamlin township. His wife died in 1849, and in June of the same year he married Miss Casandana King, a daughter of Joseph P. and Harriet (Berry) King, natives of New York State, who came to McKean county among the early settlers. Mr. and Mrs. Burlingame have a family of five children, viz.: Carlton K.; Millie J., wife of E.L. Olmsted, Norwich; George D., deceased; Effie and Royal H., who reside with their parents. They are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Burlingame has built by contract many of the roads in Hamlin township, and has been an enterprising and successful business man. He has held various township offices, including those of State road commissioner, supervisor, school director, town clerk, auditor and postmaster. Found on Tri-County web site.
