Ralph,
I have been advised the Rifes may have been Scottish and they are an entirely different family from the Rices who were of Welsh extraction. There are Rices in Buchanan CO, however not as many as there are Rifes. I have traced my husband's line back to Thomas Rice who came from England in 1683 to Hanover CO, VA.Some of his descendants went to Carter CO, KY and the widow of John E. Rice 1832-1864 moved to Buchanan CO, VA sometime around 1880-90 as she had married Frederick Stiltner who was from Buchanan CO.I believe all of the Buchanan CO Rices are descendants of John E. Rice.
Martha
