My sister's boyfriend is Dana Riemer and his Great Great Grandfather is Paul Emil Riemer. I am researching his family for him because of the information I found on my own family. If you have any information that can help me, plese reply and/or e-mail me about this. Thanks. This is what I have on Paul Emil Riemer...
b.August 9th, 1853 (Germany)
d. May 20th, 1919
married: Mathilde Emily Shilling (Germany)
2nd- Katharina Brocke (1866-1938) (America)

He came to America from Prussia through Antwerp, Belgium on the WAESLAND, arriving in New York on November 28th, 1884. His son, Otto, came with him. His son Oscar came over with an Uncle later. Paul married the girl that took care of the children on the trip over and they had two daughters and three sons. One son died at at about 2 years of age. They came to Texas because Paul Emil Riemer had asthma. They settled East of Ft.Worth (Ringo?) for a few years and then they homesteaded on McClellen Creek at a beaver dam in Gray County, Texas. They left when this site when surveyors determined they only had a half-section instead of a section.
They moved to an area southeast of Stinnett in Hutchinson County, Texas on what they though was a four-section farm but later turned out to be 3&1/2 sextions:some of which was river bottom land. They then moved to Donely County and lived in Clarendon for a time. They built a dugout at about the turn of the Century where the family lived for a couple of years. They raised grain and potatoes in the river bottom land for several years. Paul also hauled butter to Amarillo and made wine from the wild grapes which grew in profusion on the slopes of his land. In 1903 they hauled rock outcroppings for a half dugout with a wagon and team to a location about halfway between the river bottom and the prairie rim. There was a natuarl spring a few yards to the west which still provides water for the Riemer Ranch House that was later built near there. This dugout was excavated into the side of a slope, its west wall being 5 feet into the ground, the remaining 2 feet built the thick stones. It was about 12 feet by 22 feet and a wooden partiton seperated the kitchen from the living area. The stone portion was set far enough back from the excaation so that there was a foot wide ledge around the interior. This half dugout was used be the family until about 1925 and after that it was occasionally used as a line camp. A beautiful clock was brought to the homestead and used in both the dugout and the half dugout and is now in possession of a grandson (Hugo Jr). This is a musical family. Paul Emil and all eight of his children could play a musical instrument, a fiddle or guitar.
