I am trying to get more information on Jane Riel. She was born about 1819 in "Northwest" Canada. She married Joseph-Soloman Causley about 1853. They had at least three children. This was Joseph-Soloman's second marriage.
Jane is listed on the 1871 Algoma District, Mississaga as Jane F., Roman Catholic, and of Irish descent, born in the USA (though Joseph-Soloman is listed as German, yet on all accounts he's French). Jane is listed as Jane Riel on some of her daughters marriage records.
Some descendants of the Causleys have long thought that they are somehow connected to Louis David Reil. This is fuelled by a newspaper artical written in 1952 about one of Joseph-Solomans grand-daughters from his first marriage. The woman refers to her step-grandmother as the sister to Louis Riel, though she refers to her as Marie Riel. You can look here for the article :
As you've probably guessed by now, this Riel is not Louis David Riel's sister. For one, she was born 25 years before him. I'm thinking that she may be his aunt though?
I am wondering if anyone has information on the siblings of Louis Riel Sr (born 1817) and if they are able to provide any further information on Jane (or Marie ?) Riel. Is she Louis Sr's sister ??
