Northumberland Ridleys & the Cromwellian Protectorate
in the archives bldg in Nashville, TN is an early 19th C. statement by a gr-uncle, Robert Ridley. it states that he is descended from the martyr, Nicholas Ridley, by way of one of three Ridley brothers who fled England to America when the Protectorate confiscated their home in Northumberland. i am guessing Robert Ridley is referring to about 1645 or so.
do any of you English Ridleys have ANY idea of what he was referring to-- did three brothers leave the Ridley estate in that era? Robert Ridley states that his grandfather was born in Isle of Wight County, VA, in 1737 or so.
i would be indebted to anyone who may be able to shed light on this mystery, as i have seen nothing to sustantiate the statement. BTW, Robert Ridley was the son of James Ridley, who served under his neighbor, Andrew Jackson, in the War of 1812.
