I regret that I do not have W.A.C. Bridges in my files.Your family legend that he served in both the Confederate and Union armies in the Civil War well may be true; I have seen other instances of such service in that part of Tennessee. Perhaps these additional notes may be of help to you.
William Alexander Bridges was a native of Tennessee and a son of Willis Bridges, who was born in North Carolina and was a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church, devoting 45 years of his life to that holy calling. It was in Humphreys Co.,TN that William A. Bridges was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Neel Ridings, a native of that state and daughter of Joel and Penelope (May) Ridings, both natives of North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bridges began their domestic life upon a farm in Carroll Co., TN, where he carried on general agricultural pursuits until his death 18 Jan 1844. In the family were three children, of whom Wesley C. is the eldest. The others were Joel Willis and James Monroe, who died 2 Apr 1862. (Wesley Crayton Briges, in Biographical Review of Hancock Co., IL, 1907, 205-207)
They lived near Huntingdon, Carroll Co., TN. (Bertha Izora Tomlinson Hudson, Pensacola, FL, 16 Nov 1973)
William Bridges was a delegate from Mud Creek Baptist Church in Carroll Co., TN to Missouri in 1831. (Monthly meeting records, cited in Mud Creek Baptist Church, 1825-1900, transcribed by Peggy Scott Holley, 8902 Rockcrest Drive, Austin, TX 78754) The church was near Mud Creek and the Henderson Co., line; some of the early members lived in Henderson. William was a charter member of the church in 1825, excluded, then reconciliated and dismissed by letter in August 1831. (Ibid.)
W.J. Bridges of Center Point, TN, wrote to Aunts Betsey (Ridings Chambers), Martha (Ridings) and Milley (Emily Ridings Tomlinson Griffith) in Hancock Co., IL in 1888 and 1889, signing himself as "your nephew,"and mentioning "pa's family," which lived 7 or 8 miles away; Elizyann; James, Mary Ellen and Thomas, Fannie Jane, Jane, a daughter who married a man named Sheffield. (Letter, in Kenneth C. Tomlinson papers)
W.J. also mentioned 20 Oct 1888 that he had written to Aunt Marget Lovell, "who said she was surprised to hear that you all were living and was glad to hear from you." (Kenneth C. Tomlinson papers) 3 June 1889: "I have not seen any of Uncle William Lovells family lately." (Ibid.) 12 Mar 1891: "Aunt Marget Lovell has moved to Texas. They was all well and satisfied with their new home." (Ibid.)(A William Lovel married 26 Oct 1844, Maury Co., TN, Margaret P. Fitzgerald. [CD 229])
William Bridges, Jr. of Northampton Co., NC deeded 512 acres on a river bank in Stewart Co., TN to John Acree of Sumner Co., TN 19 Dec 1803 for L90 Virginia money; witnesses P. (B.?) Brown, Edward Acree, Jeremiah M. White. (Recorded in Bertie Co., NC; Stewart Co., TN DB 4, 14, Aug 1810, cited in River Counties Nov 1977, 218)
