Help!!! I have hit a brick wall with my Riddle research and am desperate. Family history has it that Terry Riddle and wife Mary Polly Patterson Riddle settled in Calhoun County (formerly Benton County; before that, the area was Upper Creek Indian territory), Alabama, after purchasing 1,000 acres of land from the Creek Indians in 1830. The 1830 census confirms the above info on Terry Riddle, but after this, the census shows no Riddles until 1860. It is my understanding that Terry Riddle's family went back to Tennessee after he died in 1844. His minor children were basically left alone and eventually went to live with relatives. Where?? Which relatives?? Terry was originally from Soddy-Daisy, Sale Creek area, Tennessee. Terry's surviving second wife Elizabeth Hanna Riddle immediately married after his death. She and her new husband James Bice inherited the Calhoun County, Alabama home and several acres. The only Riddle showing up between 1840 and 1880 is P. P. Riddle on the 1860 Calhoun County (Corn Grove, Ranges No. 8 & 9), Alabama census. He was born abt 1828 in Tennessee. What was his relationship to Terry Riddle? My gggranddad John G. Riddle (age 32, born abt 1847), wife Sarah I. and children Jason H., Mary ("Mamie") B. Riddle, and Gussie show up between 1880 and 1920. The location of John G. Riddle before 1880 would help me to determine who his father was. The 1880 census shows that his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in South Carolina. Then the 1900 census shows that his father was born in Georgia and his mother was born in South Carolina. At least the birthplace of his mother is consistent. What a mess!! My Riddle relatives have told me that our Riddles migrated from Georgia (probably on the way down from north of Chattanooga, Tennessee around Soddy-Daisy, I believe), but from what part of Georgia? His son Jason H. Riddle and wife (Sarah Lovena), children Howard G., John W. (J. W.), and Jason G. (Gordon)Riddle, show up on the 1920 census. I am attempting to establish whether P. P. Riddle was the son of Terry Riddle and father of John G. Riddle to determine if all of them were my grandfathers or if P.P. Riddle was an uncle or other relative. All records are being continually updated and corrected. All information, positive or negative will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Carolyn Riddle-Chapin Notify Administrator about this message?
