This should get you started:

There are things that should be done first.
1. Start with your own family. Write every date down Every location of a birth, marriage or death. See if you can get one or all three from a newspaper clipping.
2 Include any and all children and brothers, sisters, spouses etc. You will find later on, that you'll need this as the family will branch out.
3. Read local histories and join genealogy groups in the area you are looking in.
4. Look at as many city directories & census data you can find
5. Check for probated wills or land transfers that can back up your data.
6. Contact local museums.
7. visit sites such as internment.net to look for cemeteries
8 visit cyndislist.com
9. visit abyznewslinks.com _ Covers EVERY news outlet across the planet. Write a local paper. A family member in another city might respond if you write a local paper.
10. Contact family members via email, phone & snail mail. You might get an old photo or postcard.
11. Buy a genealogy software package to help record everyone.
12. Most important thing of all:

CITE SOURCES. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN WHEN YOU FIND IT AND WHERE If you don't, you'll be crawling back and forth trying to figure out where you found the information or who told you.
