Dear Nancy, the Rickman side of my family is the hardest I have researched so far. They are a nomadic people, very family oriented until the late 1880's. It's becoming very hard to find records mostly because they were free people of color. I did find some records in Patrick Co,Va that has the Mulatto Rickmans in Va in the 1820's, they were required to register while they were there if they weren't slaves or white. I have heard other historian tell of the Rickman family going from VA to Ohio, then found my GGGgrandfatherThomas Rickman's birth to be 1819 in Ohio. He married Rebecca Brust/Bennet/Benet in IL but she may have been born in KY or IN, just depends on which census you read. I have found little info on the Rickman's in Ohio , but have been luckier in IL and Ia. There was a document that said that our Daniel Rickman, my GGGGgrandfather was born in KY in 1895 and went by the surnames Butler and Rickman. I hope some of this helps to tie in things with someones Rickman family.
