Ricker of Manitoba, Canada and Minnesota.

I am looking for John Ricker/Rickar/Ricard - may have been married twice, one wife was Angelique Marcellais of Manitoba. According to 1891 Manitoba census he was born in Germany. Church records in Manitoba indicate he died in 1892. Their children were: John, Josephine (married William Moran of Minnesota then moved to Oakland California in 1930's), William, Alexander, Louis and Peter.

John Ricker's parents could have been John Ricker and Catherine Segur or Lague. How and why did he settle in southern Manitoba? Did he come through eastern Canada? Any leads would greatly be appreciated.
