Ricker/Burley/Burleigh - Phebe - Maine & Vermont
Posted by: M.K. Date: October 31, 2001 at 09:40:08
  of 606

Phebe Ricker, daughter of Gideon Ricker, of Berwick, ME, married 1833 John Burley.

I found them in the 1850 Census for Bolton, Chittenden County, Vermont, and later in the 1860 Census for Waterbury, Washington County, VT.

Census:

1850 Census Bolton, VT
Burley, John, 55, farmer, b. Maine
(wife) Phebe, 40, b. 1808 Maine, m. 1833, d. 1908 age 100
Rhoda, 11, b. Maine, m. James B. Cane (1 child, Walter J.)
Phebe Jr., 7, b. Maine, m. ????
Helena M., 5, b. VT, m. Lucious P. Warren (no children)
Haverhill, 24, b. 1825 Maine, m. Chastina P. Towne (2 children)
Andrew, 2, b. VT, never married

There is also an additional child for John Burley and Phebe Ricker in the 1860 Census of Waterbury, VT, a son, John, age 10, which would make his birth about 1850/1851. I do not have any additional information on him.

I believe Haverhill (my ancestor) is from John Burley's first marriage (to a Betsy Warren), as I have a date of marriage for John Burley and Phebe Ricker of 1833. There is also a James A. Burleigh that I believe is from John Burley's first marriage.

There are many Ricker's listed in the Waterbury Census for 1860, 1870, & 1880, and probably for the 1900 & 1920 Waterbury, VT Census.

There is a Zacheus Ricker listed in the 1860 Census for Waterbury, VT, age 53, b. Maine, that I cannot seem to match up directly with these Ricker's. He may be Gideon Ricker's brother, thus being Phebe Ricker's uncle. It appears that a large group of the Ricker's all moved together to this area from Maine.

There is a Ricker,an Upper Ricker, Maple Street and an Old Waterbury Cemetery that many of these people are buried in.

If anyone out there has any additional information on these families, please contact me. I also have some additional information from the Census's on some of these families if anyone is interested.

Thank you.
