Sue dies March 1968 in DC
Sam W. Richwine Sr., 82, of Cornelia died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Richwine was born in Goodville, Pa., on March 31, 1923. He was a son of the late Ivan and Sue Winters Richwine, and also was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Childs Richwine; brothers, Barton Richwine and Alfred Richwine; and sister, Isabell Martin. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a member of Cornelia First Baptist Church, and had served as a Royal Ambassadors leader for the church.
He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. He was a former trainer with the UGA Football team and was a member of the Athens Touchdown Club of the University of Georgia. He also was a volunteer trainer with the Habersham Central football team and was inducted into the Habersham County Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
Mr. Richwine was a former member of Cornelia Lions Club and Habersham County Rotary Club. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, served in the Pacific on the USS Colorado, and received the Purple Heart. He was a former counselor with Georgia Industrial Institute, and retired from the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Sam Richwine Jr. and Julie Richwine, Gainesville, David C. and Pennie Richwine, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Joseph A. and Tamara Richwine, Alpharetta; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 2005, from Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with Dr. T. Logan Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cornelia First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 96, Cornelia, GA 30531.
