Revolutionary War General Richard RICHARDSON
Hello,
I am an eighth Great Grandson of Brigadier General Richard RICHARDSON (1704-1780), who was a South Carolina Patriot General in the American Revolution.
If not for General RICHARDSON, then Gen. Thomas SUMTER "The Gamecock" (and also, incidentally, Gen. RICHARDSON's brother-in-law), probably would not have become a household name; and if not for Richard's widow's warning in 1780, Gen. Francis MARION "The Swamp Fox" would have been slaughtered by British Calvary Terrorist Banastre TARLETON.
Mel Gibson's character in the movie "The Patriot" was based mostly on a combination of SUMTER and MARION, and the British Officer TARLETON, who later burnt the RICHARDSON plantation and disinterned Gen. RICHARDSON's body in front of the family in revenge for the Widow RICHARDSON's warning to MARION, was also in the movie very true to his actual life.
I am in the preliminary stages of beginning a book on Gen. RICHARDSON and his immediate family, in particular their exploits during the American Revolution, and would greatly appreciate any information anyone could provide.
I am also extraordinarily interested in locating a portrait of the General, or of his family. TARLETON's burning of the plantation may have destroyed any that existed, but the family was allowed to save some things and hopefully portraits were among them. I again hope they survived Mr. Lincoln's War.
Yours,
J. Laughton Chandler
