Obediah Richards of Georgia who married Sarah Caroline Lambert in 1836 Henry County cannot be the son of Terah Richards, as numerous sources claim. Multiple census records show that Obediah, the husband of Sarah Lambert, was born about 1806 when Terah Richards was less than ten years old (see census data below).
Some sources provide an exact date of birth of August 10, 1819 for Obediah; most of these also cite a date of death of 1874 in Carroll County, GA. While this death information does appear to belong to the Obediah who marries Sarah Lambert, the 1819 date of birth does not. The husband of Sarah Lambert Richards was born about 1806. Furthermore, no historical record linking the 1806 Obediah to Terah Richards has been found, the name Terah does not appear anywhere in this Obediah’s line of descent, nor do these men ever live anywhere near one another.
Though the Obediah Richards 1806-1874 who marries Sarah Lambert cannot be the son of Terah, many sources claim Terah’s oldest son by Lucy Bates was named Obediah. Terah and Lucy were married in Greene County, GA in December 1818, and a male child under the age of ten appears in their household on the 1820 Federal Census (the future husband of Sarah Lambert would have been about 14 years old then). I propose there may have been two children named Obediah Richards: One married Sarah Caroline Lambert in Henry County and later died in Carroll County, GA; the other was the son of Terah Richards. I believe Terah’s son may have been born on August 10, 1819. To date, I have not found this individual on any other historical record, suggesting he may have died young. No gravesite has been discovered for the Obediah Richards born in 1819, and the Carroll County grave of Obediah Richards born 1806 is unmarked. If anyone has knowledge of a bible or other source for the August 10, 1819 date of birth besides J. R. Hamrick and C. F. Richards’ 1965 book, THE RICHARDS STORY, I hope you will let me know.
Questions, comments and/or discussion would be very welcome. I am currently working to prove the Obediah Richards born 1806 who marries Sarah Lambert is actually the son of Thomas Richards of Henry County, GA. Thomas and Obediah owned property in adjacent lots in District 12 of Henry County, where Thomas moved after winning Lot 92 in the 1821 GA Land Lottery. Land Lottery records indicate Thomas Richards was living in Morgan County in 1821. The 1830 Federal Census for Henry County shows a male of Obediah’s age in Thomas Richards’ household at that time.
