St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, April 30, 1936:

E. E. Rich of Hampshire, observed his ninety seventh birthday anniversary Sunday.

He is Hampshire's only surviving Civil War veteran. he enlisted in the war of the rebellion and served with Company K, 141st Illinois Infantry. In 1864 he cast his first vote for president, voting for Abraham Lincoln while stationed with his company at Columbus, Ky.

Mr. Rich was born April 26, 1839 in a "two story" log house near Starke Station. His father, Elijah rich, bought 210 acres of government land at Starks for $1.25 per acre, riding horseback from Vermont in 1835 to select the site for his home. The next year he brought his family to Kane county.
