Bobby, without more information, it's difficult to know whether or not I have anything which could help you, so this is just a stab in the dark. J. W. Rice was born about 1806 and died probably between 1842-1850. On 18 July 1842 he married Elizabeth White at Columbus, Colorado Co., Republic of Texas. She was a widow with 2 children: William Berry White and Mary Jane White, both born in Missouri, I believe. Elizabeth White was born in 1806 in Tennessee, and both of her parents were from Virginia.
J. W. Rice and Elizabeth settled at Hallettsville in Lavaca Co., TX. They had one child together: James H. Rice who was born 1843 at Hallettsville. J. W. Rice doesn't appear on the 1850 census for Texas. His son, however, is listed on the 1870 census of Lavaca Co. with wife Mary and two small children (Martha and John B). Also living with them is his 64-year-old mother, Elizabeth.
A Rice researcher with whom I corresponded a number of years ago was a grandson of John B. Rice, and he told me that there were other children born to James H. Rice: a James Wesley Rice (settled at Georgetown, TX), Virginia Rice (married a Jones of San Antonio) and possibly 2 or 3 other children not named in the correspondence.
James H. Rice served in the Confederate Army. He left Hallettsville about 1871 and moved to Fayette Co., then to Hempstead, Waller Co. where he is shown on the 1880 census. About 1884 he moved to Houston.
The 1870 census index for Lavaca Co. also lists a James P. Rice. I have no information on him other than what is shown on the 1870 census. I hope some of this may be helpful to you. Good luck.
