Thank you for making that clear for me. I thought you meant the William Rice in Henry Co, VA was your "proven" line.

I only have a small bit of information and not very organized.

"Abstracts of Henry Co, VA Deed Books I and II" [FHL]

I find this first one interesting. Why recorded in Henry Co, VA? Oops, guess I found out. Henry Co, was formed 1776/77 and one of the parent counties was Pittsylvania.

Deed pages 56,57 (p 9 in this publication) 14 Jan 1777
HENRY RICE of Wataga[sic] Settlement to Thomas Edwards of the county of Pittsylvania...500 pounds...land lying in said Pittsylvania Co, on Irvin (Smith) River and Home Creek, being 200 acres more or less
Wit:
Wm Edwards, Sr
Samuel Sweet
James (X) Edwards
[you'll see Wm Rice is also on the Smith River]

Today Watauga, VA is in current day Washington Co, VA. Which places it right above the area in NE TN that also was referred to as Watauga in the real early days.

I've seen Mayo River in land records for my Frederick Hutchins in Henry Co, VA.

Deed pages 154, 155, 156 (in this book p 28) 11 Nov in the XIII year of the Reighn[sic] of our Soverign[sic] Lord King George Third in the year of our Christ 1773 between HENRY RICE of Pittsylvania Co of the one part of the same, for the sum of twenty five pounds land on the No Fork of the Mayo River containing 180 acres more or less which was granted said RICE by patent bearing date 16 Mar 1771
Wit:
Frederick Fulkerson
Leo.Vendegreft
Henry France

Deed page 281, 282 (page 51 this book) 28 Sep 1779
JOHN RICE of Pittsylvania Co to Wm Alexander of Henry Co ...100 pounds....150 acres in county of Henry on both sides of Marrowbone Creek. Signed JOHN RICE and MARY(X)Rice
Wit:
Samuel Bevins
Charles (X) Bevins
Abraham Alexander Frankling

In 1781 a land transaction that gives in the description--land between Irvin River and Marriabone[sic] Creek ... joining JOHN RICE.

Deed page 270, 271 (page 105 in this book)22 Aug 1782
John Kelly of Henry Co to WILLIAM RICE of same.. 10 pounds...land north side Smith River....76 acres....and joins Elkins corner.

In 1782 land transaction that includes in description -- beginning at Rockhouse Branch and with lines of WILLIAM RICE

Inquisition pg 104 (page 110 this book)
Inquisition for the Commonwealth of VA indented and taken 18 Jan 1783 before [then a long list men] WILLIAM RICE of Henry Co was lawfully seized in his messuage [dwelling house with barn etc] on Smith River, said Rice leased in 1775-76 for 10 yrs in succession to Humphrey Scoggins in 1781, said Scoggins leased remainder of 10 yrs to Major John Hampton of whom said WM RICE as the Jury determined by lawful contract purchased 3 yrs being the remainder of the said lease which expired 1 Jan last and therefore possession land should be the privilege of said WM RICE, but Nimrod Morris with strong hands held possession from the 1st of Jan and continues to hold same and doth keep out said WM RICE to a great disturbance of the peace of the Commonwealth.

Rather interesting record. The name Scoggins sounds familiar to me. I'll have to go back through records on some of my family lines see if it pops up somewhere.

Deed page 329, 330 (page 114 in this book) 27 Oct 1782
Richard Dickens of Henry Co to DANIEL RICE of the same...45 pounds sells 206 acres with lines of Gray.
Wit:
John Marr
Wm Smith
James Pigg

10 Jun 1779 (p 149 this bk) a long list of surveys includes:

DANIEL RICE, Stone's Creek, 231 acres

Index shows JOHN RICE on page 150, but I do not see his name. Need to check this book again, see if maybe he was on p 151??? Might help to know which waterway the survey was done for this John Rice.

"Abstracts of Deed Bk III & IV of Henry Co, VA

1784 DANIEL RICE is a witness on a land transaction

1784 looks like part of a record, maybe something to do with previous record.... part of 742 acres claimed by WM RICE and part by Nathan Hall

1791 land transaction that includes in description.. 142 acres with lines of JOHN RICE and Newsom Pace.

1791 land transaction includes in description...on north side of Smith River and Rock House Branch with lines of John Kelly and WM RICE.

I find the following interesting. You don't often find a female as a witness. From earlier record it is established wife of Wm Rice is Mary. Do you suppose someone in this record is family to Mary????

Pg 131-33 (113 this bk) 14 Mary 1787, proved 26 Jul 1790
Benjamin Hubbard of Henry Co to James Oakes of the same ... 35 pounds paid by James Roberts of Henry Co conveys 124 acres (said land was granted to Thomas Grisham by patent at Williamsburg and recorded in Pittsylvania Co).... located south side of Smith River.
Wit:
Gabriel Roberts
WILLIAM RICE
MARY RICE

9 Apr 1787 poll taken on the election of Delegates held at Henry Co courthouse for Thomas Cooper, Esq.... only Rice I see is WILLIAM RICE

1788 land transaction includes....on Smith River joins the lines of JOHN RICE

1787 land transaction includes....on Smith River joins JOHN RICE

My BIG find---

Deed page 231, 232 (page 39 this bk) 29 Oct 1785
DANIEL RICE and JUDY his wife of Henry Co and Parish of Patrick to Samuel Croucher for the sum of 45 pounds sells and conveys land on both sides of Gray's fork, joins PENN and NEAL in the amount of 206 acres. This is the land whereon said Rice now lives.
Signed DANIEL RICE
JUDY RICE
Wit:
Abraham Penn
John Cameron
George Penn
Bartlett Eads
proved and recorded 27 Jul 1786, Henry Co, VA

A book I'm anxious to look at again is "Complete Index and Abstract of the Henry Co, Order Books #1 and #2 (1777-1782) I did this publication for my Jones and Standefer lines. I copy index pages and I see I did not do this one for any Rices. All kinds of court records, including who was appointed when as captain of local militia, wills, probates etc.

In doing a quick time-line of what I do have on Rice, shows Henry Rice had a patent as early as 1771. He and his wife sell land in 1789 and do not seem to show up again. I'd like to find out if Henry had a will or probate record, or his wife Mary. Because Daniel and William buy land soon after in 1782.

Although Daniel shows up on 1779 list for surveys, I don't think he bought that land. In 1782 both Daniel and William seem to buy their first piece of land. That land is the same one Daniel and wife Judy sell in 1785, no other sale of land for Daniel. But, of course I only have records from limited source at this time.
