MACK STARNES RICE/ AKA MACK S. VON RICE, BORN 2-17-1935, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. Mack was the son of Mack S. Rice, Sr., and Wanda Griffin-Rice of Millington, Tennessee and Phoenix, Arizona, died 08-16-2008 at the Paradise Valley Hospital in Phoenix. Mack was the Grandson of Carl Allen Rice and Clemmye Starnes-Rice of Millington & Covington, TN. and Casa Grande, AZ.. He was the Great Grandson of James Henry Rice and Martha Ann Allen-Rice of Covington and John & Frances Starnes of Munford, Tn. The G-G-Grandson of Charley Allen & Penny Ann Dozier-Allen of Covington and Cyrus C. Rice and Martha Virginia Feezor-Rice also of Covington. Pre 1957, the Rice family owned a large cotton farm (Hwy. 51 North of Millington, Tn., The Rice Trucking Company and MILLINGTON COTTON GIN. Mack attended Millington Public Schools, graduating from Millington High School in 1953. After High School Graduation he attended the Memphis Cotton Grading School. In 1956 Mack joined the U.S. Military and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon completion of his military service Mack went to Casa Grande, Arizona where his family had relocated during his term of duty. Mack joined his father and grandfather in the management of their cotton farms, " Signal Mountain Farms". in the Casa Grande Valley. ( Casa Grande Valley was one of the largest producers of cotton in the world during this era). May 30th 1958 Mack married Elisa Jeane Strange the daughter of Bert Wm. & Frances Wall-Strange of Casa Grande, a local building contractor. The Strange family moved to Casa Grande in Dec. 1945 from Bakersfield, Ca. after Bert had completed the construction of the barracks and hangers at Edwards Air Force Base. In 1958 after the marriage Mack and Elisa moved to Fort Worth, Texas where Mack was enrolled in American Flyers School for Pilots and Elisa was enrolled at TCU. After Graduation Mack & E. J. moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi where Mack Sr., & Wanda Griffin-Rice had relocated and purchased Green Hills Motel on Highway 11 South, about 40 miles from New Orleans. Mack began flying for Delta Airlines out of New Orleans. In Hattiesburg Mack's only child a son was born. Kurt Griffin-von Rice on Sept. 11, 1962. For health reasons, Mack & E.J. returned to Arizona where Mack became gin manager for Producers Cotton Oil Company in Chandler, Az. and at Producers Eloy Gin. 1967-1972 Mack became Finance Manager for Producers in Atlanta, Georgia where they relocated. Due to a transfer Mack & E. J. returned to Phoenix, Arizona. During the coming years Mack & E.J. traveled all over Europe many times to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium,Luxemborg,England. Seeing the wonders of the world in Paris,Amsterdam,and Prague and pursuing Macks hobby of collecting WW11 artifacts. In 1997 Mack retired and traveled some more to visit the American Battlefields in Europe, East and West Berlin and visit the museums with the old master paintings and the great catherdals of Europe. On May 30, 2008 Mack and E.J. celebrated 50 years of marriage. Mack is survived by his wife Elisa J. of the home in Phoenix, his son, Dr. Kurt Griffin von Rice & wife Deborah Ott-von Rice of Scottsdale, Arizona and sister Peggy Dare Rice-Thurmond and husband Dr. Warren C. Thurmond of Tucson, Arizona. Services were held Wednesday October 18, 2008 in the Green Acres Chapel of Light in Scottsdale Arizona. Burial was next to his father and mother in the Green Acres Garden of Prayer. Mack was of the Baptist faith and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in NorthEast Phoenix.
