Thank you for your suggestion. This Caleb is not from George Gardner's family. Fortunately, information I got last time I was in Rhode Island gave me the clue I needed to untangle the mystery. (The recently published extracts from newly discovered wills, gave me his father's name as Caleb). By searching from home I found that this family moved to Newport from Brookline,MA about1728 or 9, and is from the branch of Thomas Gardner's family that stayed in Massachusetts when some of them went to Nantucket. Having at last solved this problem that my great-aunt was working on before I was born has been very gratifying! Now, if I could just find out about the family of Caleb's wife, Eleanor Phillips. She was an orphan at the time of he marriage and her guardian was her uncle, John Freebody. I may never solve that problem, as my husband's poor health keeps me at home in Minnesota. Thank you for taking the time to answer my query with a suggestion.
