Thank you so much for your help. I know a great deal about Jonathon Bailey's life in Missouri starting about 1858 until his death in 1906. Since I posted my request,I found he is the son of Alexander Hamilton Smith of Peterborough, New Hampshire b. 1804 and died in St. Louis, Missouri in 1958. Alexander's line is very well documented through William and Samuel Smith of Peterborough. His mother was Sophronia Bailey daughter of Jonathon Bailey. She was born in 1805 but I don't know where. She died in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1848. This is where I get stuck again. I still can't find any record (proof) of Jonathon Bailey Smith's birth in 1836 or marriage (abt 1858 to Mary Jane Jennings Watkins of Louisville Kentucky) His parents, Alexander and Sophronia married in Charlestown,MA in 1831. The notice of their marriage says Alexander was from NY. They had a daughter born in 1833 named Sally but I don't know where. Then they had John in Newport, Rhode Island (I got this when I visited his interment records at the cemetery and his death certificate gives his birth place as Rhode Island...as do some of the census)They had three other children after John, A. Hamilton 1837-1840,Jesse Smith 1839,and Eliza Bailey in 1841. I can't find census that I can actually confirm as this family nor can I find any information about Sophronia or her father, Jonathon. The only other thing I know is Jonathon had another daughter named Eliza (older than Sophronia) who married a Dr. Jesse Smith. They lived in Cincinnati and when Dr. Smith died she married a John Wright. On Alexander's headstone it says "Major" which is another dilemma because this was not a time of war. I thought maybe he was in the military in Rhode Island or maybe she went there to have the baby with family because he was gone but this is just speculation. Mary Watkins, Jonathon's wife's family goes back to Little Compton but I haven't found a connection yet. This is a line that leads to Pricilla Mullins and John Alden. I appreciate all of your help. My next trip is going to Rhode Island because I am fascinated. So many of my lines keep leading to Rhode Island! Thank you again so very much! Judie Notify Administrator about this message?
