I think the Hugh McManus living with Mary & Alphonse is a huge clue.I looked at all of the Mary McManus entries I could find for 1880 in RI and found one that had a Hugh living with the family. His (Hugh) age is off but that is a common occurrence on different records:

Next I checked Providence vitals to see what the birth date was for the above Mary.Providence vitals has:
"Mary McManus of Patrick and Annie born 12 July 1873".You will note this birth date info also matches your Mary's info from the 1900 census.
The 1880 census tells us Annie's maiden name was Hopkins so I looked for that marriage in the Providence vitals:
"Patrick McManus married Annie Hopkins 7 Feb 1872"
You should be able to get both these records from the RI state archives. They only charge 15 cents a copy.If you try to get the same copy from the Providence city clerk they will charge you about 15 dollars a record. The marriage record possibly will give you the parents names for Patrick and Annie.Email me at home if you have any questions.get my email address by clicking on my name.
