Passed away peacefully at home in Carmichael on 24 October and 12 November, respectively, after their valiant battles with cancer. They were married 52 years. Daughters, Denise Cavanaugh (Jim) of San Antonio, TX and Sue Lamb (Jim) of Fairfax, VA and three grandchildren, Kelly Lamb, Casey and Tobias Joseph Cavanaugh, survive them. Vally is also survived by her 97-year old mother, Meta Rau. Joe was born in Providence, RI on 3 Jan 1929. Vally was born on 20 Aug 1927 in Freudenberg, Germany. In his distinguished 28-year Air Force career, Joe achieved the highest enlisted rank, Chief Master Sergeant. Vally worked as a librarian for the American occupation forces in Wiesbaden, Germany where they were married in 1951. Joe's military assignments took his family to Germany, Washington, DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Korea and California. He was a military personnel specialist. Vally worked part-time in libraries around the world. In 1971, Vally studied library science at American River College and later, worked for the Sacramento County Library system. She was on the Arden Library staff for many years, retiring in 1992. She spent many happy hours in her garden. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1976, Joe joined the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD), working as a representative of the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program. He worked with civilian employers to create job opportunities for veterans of all services. As an instructor with the military Transition Assistance Program, he traveled throughout California preparing military personnel for civilian employment. He retired from EDD in 1996. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Elks Lodge 2103. They are interred at Fair Oaks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the American Cancer Society or the SPCA.
