This is a long shot, I have a Thomas Jefferson Roberts, son of James L Roberts, listed in census as born in Rhode Island. Thomas J Roberts married Lucinda Pettyes in Amsterdam NY. Is is possible both families originated in Rhode Island. Lucinda parents were Varnum Pettys and Phebe Jones. Varnum's dad was Robert Pettyes from Rhode Island. Pleas let me know if there is a connection.
