Williard Jerome Phillips married Eleanor Carlisle in 1866 They are recorded in the 1875 Ri State census as living in Bristol and or Providence RI
At the time of the census, Williard not only had his wife and kids, but also his mother-in law, and sister-in-law living with his family. The mother-in-law's name was Margaret Carlisle was from a British family who had been living in Africa. Her daughters, both Williard's wife Eleanor and her younger sister are recorded as being born in England. Somewhere along the line the Carlisle's moved from Africa to England, to America.
The names of Williard J. & Eleanor Phillips children in 1875 were:
Williard J. Phillips died early in March 1885 leaving Eleanor a widow who now had to raise her 5 surviving children by herself.
Anna Maria Phillips Merry was not only a relative, but she needed help with her sick and ailing husband Miles G. Merry Anna &Miles had only one young school aged daughter named Mary Grace Merry.
So, the story goes the Eleanor and some of her younger children moved in with Anna Merry's family in Lonsdale (now Lincoln) Rhode Island. The 1885 Ri State Census records these two families as living together in that year
Williard Jerome is not listed because he died prior to 1885 census
Benjamin Anthony Phillips should have been 17 years old (not recorded)
The above three childrens names were not found in the Rhode Island State census of 1885 for either Bristol, Lonsdale, or Lincoln. We wonder if these three lived away from their mother because they were sent out to work to help earn money to survive?
Sarah Margaret Phillips should have been 9 years old (not recorded)
We believe that Sarah and her little brother Walter went with their mother to the Merry Home and called that home---their home for a while. The 1885 Census lists 6 people in the household. Miles, his wife Anna, his daughter Mary, Williard's widow Eleanor, Eleanor's son Walter, and Elanor's daughter Sarah,
Miles G. Merry grew sicker and finally died on September 6, 1889. Now both of the women were widows raising their children alone. .
DO ANY OF THESE NAMES SOUND FAMILIAR TO ANYONE?
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS A CONNECTION TO THESE SURNAMES FROM THESE TOWNS?
