I have an ancestor, George James MOUNTFORD who after his arrival in Australia in 1825 started the use of the name MUMFORD. I have noticed in US records there are other instances of this duality in the name MOUNTFORD / MUMFORD. What I am looking for is knowledge concerning the use of the names MOUNTFORD / MUMFORD. I believe they both have common roots in "de MONTFORT". Can anyone help??
