Research in Rhode Island

I'm having difficulties finding out who my GG-Grandfather's parents were. According to the 1850 census he and his brother were born in Rhode Island in 1807 & 1804, respectively. I contacted the state and they have very few records from back then.

Can anyone give me some recommendations for libraries and heritage centers in Rhode Island which excel in the field of genealogy. I live in Michigan and would like to make the trip as productive as possible.

Thanks.
