On April 24, 2009, Patsy Smith posted an inquery about her husband's great-grandfather, John Carr Rhyne(sorry about the 2 year delay...I'm just now plunging into the genealogy game).John Carr Rhyne was my great grandfather as well. His younger son, John Anthony Rhyne was my grandfather. What I know so far is that JCR was born in Zanesville Ohio October 13, 1831 and died in Bureau County, Illinois on September 14, 1881.Apparently, JCR left Zanesville when he was about 9 years old (don't know whether his family left, or whether he struck out on his own).He then "worked the river" (whatever that means) and eventually showed up in Bureau County when he was 20 or 21.I grew up about 50 miles north of Bureau, where my grandfather ended up in 1914.I, too, was told that my Rhyne forebears were Irish and perhaps the family name was Ryan at one time.Don't know whether there's any truth to that yarn.I would love to know anything that anyone knows about the pre-John Carr Rhynes.
