Hello, Retha,
It has been a while since we talked. I descend from Redding Rhymes, who d. Calhoun Co., Ga., son of old John who d. Bulloch Co., GA, 1851. Have you found anything further on the Cannon/Rhymes/Martin mystery? Do you remember my telling you what my Dad, b. 1899 in Clay Co., GA, said about the Cannon name? Do believe he was confused..don't think he ever knew about the Rimes connection. Not once did he tell me about any Rimes. I am double-loaded with Rhymes genes, far more than Jones. It would be hard not to know about it, but it was a different time back then. Life was hard, a big family of kids born one after the other, who were seen and not heard, didn't question, and gossip was held to a bear minimum that only circulated among the adults. His grandmother, Margaret Rimes Jones d. 1891, before he was born, but she was replaced with her sister, Lavinia Rimes, the same year, 1891. All that to say this: he once told me the Jones name was at one time Cannon from Ireland. He didn't know why it was changed. I believe he was confused, not knowing about the Rimes connection. Someone might have told him his grandmother's name was originally Cannon and changed when he got to Am. She would be Grandmother Jones to him.
So, like you, I have wondered & wondered. We know the Cannons, Martins, Rimes were always together. So, believe, without anything to go on, it might have been Cannon to Rhymes. How are you thinking?

Where did you tell me you live?
