I'm not sure if this your william or if it helps but while reading the roster of the buckingham battalion formed by the patriots committee for safety in 1775, there was 3 ray's a william and a david sr and a david jr, these were the origional minutemen and were men from albemarle, amherst, and surrounding counties, that area was known then as the buckingham district, this roster was posted on the web in a desendant thing of david allen long if you would like to read it....james ray
