If any of you have any thoughts on the following info, I would appreciate your sharing them. I've seen the mother of Minerva Caroline Beddingfield listed as Misami Bane and also as a Merritt but think she may actually have been a Reynolds instead.

The following is a copy and paste of some notes I made. It may have scrambled when I pasted but please let me know if any of this connects to your research:

"Minerva Caroline (Bedingfield?) Bain was the granddaughter of Larkin C Reynolds according to a paper in his estate records.

Use of <> indicates year of birth according to census record and names are spelled as found in various records. Notes to consider:

1840 Greenville, SC census record for “Larkin Runnels” (Larkin C Reynolds) shows wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters

1850 Greenville, SC census for
“L C Runnels” age 50 b. NC
Elizabeth age 60 b. SC
Meory C (Memory C) age 22 b. SC
Carentine (Aley Caroline) age 18 b. SC
L C (Elzy Franklin) age 14 b. SC

(Notice one daughter is missing by 1850. The 1850 Greenville Co, SC census shows the “Cils Bidingfield/wife Misenusso” family and the “David Bane/wife Margaret” family living very close to each other.)

1850 Greenville, SC census
“Cils Bidingfield” (Charles Bedingfield?) 20 <1830> b NC
Misenusso 23 <1827> b. SC (d/o Larkin Reynolds?)
Jane age 1 b SC (did she die?)

1850 Greenville, SC census for
“David Bane”* age 27 b. NC <1823>
Margaret age 26 b. NC
Levi age 5
Elizabeth age 3
Jane age 1
* David Bane is the brother of “Alexander Bane who married Sarah E Bishop.” Alexander is the father of “David Riley Bane who married Minerva Caroline Bedingfield.” So this David Bane <1823> is the uncle of David Riley Bane <1852>. Minerva is the granddaughter of Larkin C. Reynolds and therefore, it is likely Minerva’s mother was the oldest daughter of Larkin.

1860 Henderson, NC census for
“Charles Bedingfield” age 30 <1830>
wife: Misourie age 30 b. SC <1830>
Jas age 10 b. NC
Edward age 9 b. NC
John age 7 b. NC
Mancey age 2 b. NC (female, Minerva Caroline?)

1864 Charles Bedingfield dies in a Union prisoner of war camp at Camp Douglas, IL. Date of birth 22 Nov 1829 and death 17 July 1864. His father was Nathaniel, b. 30 Jan 1792 and d. 27 Apr 1866. His mother was Minerva Catherine unk?, b. 22 Dec 1803 and d. 27 Oct 1860. (have not verified)

1870 Where is Misenusso/Misourie/Misami/Masenni, the widow of Charles Bedingfield now? Did she remarry or die?

1870 Henderson, NC, “Minerva Caroline Bedingfield” may be living with “Levi Bedingfield and his wife Julia.” This Levi <1844> is likely the brother of Minerva’s father “Charles Benjamin Bedingfield,” so he is her uncle. His wife is Julia Frances Ward. Minerva is listed last after two younger children and is 11 years old <1859>. By 1874, she has married David Riley Bane.

1880 Green River, Henderson, NC
“Riley Bane” age 28 <1852>
Manerva C age 23 b. NC, father b. NC, mother b. NC*
James E age 5
Mary J. age 3
David D age 1
*If Minerva’s mother was the daughter of Larkin C Reynolds, she was probably born in SC even though Larkin was from NC. See census records for this Bane family for 1910 and 1920 which list SC as mother's birth.

1890 See Estate Records of Larkin C Reynolds, Greenville, SC (located probate court, Apartment 32, File 43) for notice from “Minerva Caroline Bain” giving power of attorney to her brother, “E J Bedingfield” to represent her in settling the estate of her grandfather, Larkin C Reynolds, dated 1890 from Henderson County, NC. Larkin’s will was proven 6 Feb 1872. He named his son, Elzy Franklin, as executor. Elzy had petitioned to close the estate in 1890.

1900 Green River, Henderson, NC
“David Bane” age 48
Maemris c Bane age 42 <1858>
Marry J age 23
David D age 21
William A age 19
Elizy F age 16
Chonley m age 14
John W age 13
Julia M age 11
Buffra c age 9 (Rufus? See 1910)
Bessy L age 7
Lemuel L age 3

1910 Green River, Henderson, NC
“Riley D Bane” age 58
Manerua c Bane age 50 b. NC, father NC, mother SC
John W age 23
Julia M age 21
Rufus K age 19
Bessie L age 17
Lee L age 15
Ulysser p age 9

1920 Green River, Henderson, NC
“Riley Bane” age 68
Caroline age 62 b. NC, father NC, mother SC
Coley age 25
Lee L age 23
Ulysses P age 18
Loid R 16

1924 Found Online “Minerva Caroline (Bedingfield) Bane died 17 February 1924 and is buried in Bane Cemetery, Henderson, NC.” However, I also found census records in 1930 for Riley and Caroline. Found NC Death Collection entry for Caroline M Bayne <1859> who died 16 Feb 1942. Online entry likely transposed year of death numbers. Correct date of death likely 1942.

1930 Green River, Henderson, NC
“Riley D Bayne” <1852> NC
Caroline <1863> (same wife??)
Milton C <1885> son
Kelsey R <1894> son
Marion <1878> son
James D <1916> grandson

Living close are these 3 families:
(1) Lee Bayne <1897> b. NC
(2) Ulis U <1901> wife Alia C <1908 and children
(3) Jackson T Ward <1868>; sister Drucilla A Bayne <1860>; sister Sarah L Ward <1865>; Willie P Bayne<1884> Nephew; Ulis J Bayne <1886> Neph & Junie U Bayne<1890> niece

1940 Riley David Bayne dies in NC
1942 Caroline M. Bayne dies in NC.

Notes from a phone conversation and emails from Bane and Bedingfield researcher whose online family tree stated that the mother of Minerva Caroline Bedingfield (who married Riley Bane) was a Merritt. This researcher told me there was a town called Merrittsville that is now mostly covered by the Greenville Watershed and that an elderly aunt had told her many years ago that Minerva's mother was a Merritt. She has no proof or documentation of any sort, just the remembrance of that aunt and was open to the idea that Minerva Caroline’s mother may have been a Reynolds instead. I told her about the estate paper of Larkin C Reynolds and why I was interested. She said Minerva's mother could have been a Reynolds or maybe even a Reynolds who had married a Merritt but whose first husband had died. She said although she had spent countless hours in the Henderson Courthouse and library, as well as the NC Archives in Raleigh, etc, she had not found written documentation of the Merritt connection and therefore, the Reynolds connection could be correct. (Update March 17, 2008: I found several online family trees that have a Minerva Catherine Merritt who married a Bedingfield. I think this may have been Charles Bedingfield’s mother or grandmother. If so, he named his daughter Minerva after her, and probably the Caroline was from the Reynolds side since Larkin named one of his daughters Aley Caroline. Larkin’s mother was Nancy C Cleveland Reynolds. Perhaps her middle name was Caroline. Just a guess.)

Another mystery was also solved concerning some online cemetery info I saw on Find-A-Grave. There was a picture of the grave markers of "Caroline Minerva B. Bane" and her husband "Riley David Bane." The date of death on Minerva's was 1924. This is apparently where the online 1924 date is coming from on those family trees. Someone on Find-a-Grave had entered a note saying the date of death was wrong. The researcher said she and a cousin went to the Bane Family Cemetery in Henderson, NC with the elderly aunt who told her who was buried in some of the graves marked with a field stone then they made concrete markers with their names and info. (It is likely one of them transposed the numbers when going from the aunt then to their notes then to the concrete marker.) The researcher I spoke with said Minerva Caroline died around 1942 because her mother remembered her. She said she has a picture of Minerva Caroline with husband Riley Bane and some grown children. She said "Uncle Bob" helped raise Minerva Caroline after her father, Charles Bedingfield, died at a Union POW Camp Douglas, IL during the Civil War. I told her I had found a Minerva, age 11, living with "Levi and Julia Bedingfield" in 1870. She said, Yes, that was "Uncle Bob"… don't know why they called him that because his name was "David Levi" and he was the brother of Charles. She also said she could not find any further mention of Minerva Caroline's mother after the death of Charles. Also, Charles and David Levi were sons of Col. Nathaniel Bedingfield.

Bane Family story said 3 brothers came from VA. John went south and was this line. “Bane” is original spelling then changed to “Bain.” (I may have that backwards!) Some spellings of “Bayne” online also.
