Thank you for your reply, Kathie! I don't have a specific year when John P. Renehan came to the States; I do know he was born 1/1/1842 in Ireland. I have found no documentation listing where in Ireland. He served in the 88th Indiana Infantry from 8/29/1862 to 6/7/1865, then returned to Indiana. He married 1/15/1869. He and his wife had 4 children; the youngest was my g-grandfather. The death record that Noble County, Indiana posted online only states his father's first name, John (though wouldn't it be usual that his surname would be the same as his son?), and his mother's surname, Burke.
What little I have found have suggested the name is centered around Tipperary, Cork and Limerick. Wish I could find something concrete, but I understand I may never find anything more. :P
