Hi Jessica. I have Josephte Chales at their marriage. There are 2 close forms for that name : Charles and Chasle. Usually they are 2 distinct unrelated names and, phonetically, Charles is pronounced as expected, while Chasle is pronounced as Chal.
Charles varies to Clément, Duval, Lajeunesse, Oléron or Quenoche, while Chasle varies to Châle or Duhamel.
Not much prevents the officient from hearing (and writing) Charles as Chal dependent on the quality of his hearing or that of pronounciation of the said Charles.
Also, or Louis' burial I have him in St-Zotique at the same date. This was found several years back and I did not keep proof of that. St-Zotique records begin in 1852 so it is possible that the burial was recorded at both places since the officient was serving both St-Polycarpe, the mother parish, and St-Zotique from 1849 to 1852. Can you confirm your source?
I hope this helps.
