> POWDER MILL EXPLOSION
> TWO MEN KILLED
>
>On Thursday morning, last, between 10 and 11 o'clock, the powder mill of
Capt. Wm. C. Wren, at Indian Run, this County, blew up with a loud report.
Two of the employees, Albert Leopard and Wm. Kreider, were killed. Both
were most shockingly burned, in fact literaly roasted.Reopard was blown
about fifty yards from the mill, and died in about two hours, after
suffering intense agony. The impression is that the powder was allowed, by
the men,, to get too dry in the working, and that in consequence it ignited
with the result stated. Both of the deceased were steady, good work men.
Reopard leaves a wife and child.Kreider was unmarried.Capt. Wren's loss
is $1,000.00.This unfortunate accident will not interfer with his ability
to supply powder, as he has a mill in operation at Drehersville.

Notes for Lydia A. Reider:
Also known asReiter, Ridder, Reighter, Reder, Rider.
Lydia gave birth to 9 children.
In the year 1900, she and Tom were married for 32 years and lived on East Railroad St.,St. Clair, Pennsylvania, where Tom worked as a carpenter. Their daughter-in-law and son William, who was 23 years old at the time was living with them.William had been married at 20 years old.Maude, who was thirteen and single also lived with them.
According to the international Genealogical Index/North America, Lydia's marriage to Albert H. Reppert took place on December 29, 1967 at Saint John's Reformed Church, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA.
Taken from Church Records from St. John's Reformed Church, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County PA:
1.12/29/1867 Albert H. Reppert and Lydia A. Reder (or Reider) were married.Ceremony preformed by Rev. D. B. Albright
2.Burial records from the same church indicate that Albert H. Reppert was buried on April 9, 1868 at the age of 21 years. This being the case, Albert died 3 month and a few days after theygot married and Lydia became pregnant with Margaret immediately upon the marriage.
This being the case and Maggie being born in September of 1868, the census records of 1900 show that Tom Reed and Lydia were then married for 32 years indicating that Lydiaand Tom married in the year of 1868 sometime. That also being the case, the children: Manden born in 1866 and Emanuel born in 1866 could not have been the biological children of Lydia Reider but from a former marriage of Tom Reed's - that is unknown to us at this time and not being Reppert children because Reppert and Reider were not married until 1867.
Family records show Lydia A. ; obit says Lydia E.

USA, and died March 12, 1949 in St. Clair, PA. USA.
Notes for Margaret C. Reppert Reed:
Taken from Church Records from St. John's Reformed Church, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County PA:
1.12/29/1867 Albert H. Reppert and Lydia A. Reder (or Rider) were married.Ceremony preformed by Rev. D. B. Albright
2.Burial records from the same church indicate that Albert H. Reppert was buried on April 9, 1868 at the age of 21 years. This being the case, Albert died 3 month and a few days after they got married and Lydia became pregnant with Margaret immediately upon the marriage.Lydia then married Tom Reed and adopted Margaret, giving her his surname but all her records indicated she went by her biological father's surname of Reppert.
Death notice spells Rephert as maiden name.
Margaret Reppert is the step or adopted daughter of Thomas Reed. (No records were found on an adoption) When Margaret spoke of her siblings, it was not stated, who were the Reed or Reppert descendants.Since Albert Reppert died right after his marriage it appears that Margaret was the only child of the Reider/Reppert marriage.
According to her son's (William J. Stephenson, Sr.) Family bible, it says Maggie died 5/18/1955. Various spelling of the Reppert name are:Rephart, Rephert, Reopard,ReppertAKA Maggie Reed
According to marriage license at Schuylkill County Court House Maggie was born September 17, 1868 in Rush Township. Schuylkill County, Pa.Married Charles J. Stephenson 7/1889 resided in Tamaqua, Mahony Township, then in St. Clairand Diener's Hill. She is buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in St. Clair.
Margaret was from a family of Quakersand lived in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania during her young life. Her natural father died and her mother remarried Tom ReedShe had a carefree childhood in a land that was still very much untamed.
She came from a close knit family and was very fond of her brothers and sisters. After marriage, Charlie and she would often visit family that lived in Reading, Pa. in a horse and buggy. It took the entire day to make the journey from Pottsville, Pa.She did have a sister that moved to the west in a Conestoga wagon as part of a wagon train, and was never heard from since. It was assumed by her family that she was scalped by an Indian. She told stories about fish being so numerous in streams near her childhood home that she could catch them with her hands.
He husband was a blacksmith. In those days this was a very lucrative business and they were considered well off. Maggie was a homemaker. They owned a large farm that extended from Diener's Hill to Eagle Hill. Both were highly respected in the community. When Charlie died, she was still able to be financially and physically independent. In fact she often provided mortgages to family members when they couldn't get bank financing.
Maggie could not have children of her own so adopted three. Her first son, Billy was adopted from the Jones family. When they lived in Buck Run, Pa., her best friend, Bill's mother, died from galloping consumption, which is present day tuberculosis. His father died in a coal mining accident six months after Elizabeth died.Billy was an infant, still nursing, when she adopted him and she baptized him on his mothers casket, the name his natural mother had chosen.no birth registration of the child under the name of William Jones but adoption papers were found from Jones to Stephenson. We do not know if his other 2 brothers were ever legally adopted. When Billy's natural uncle came from Wales to take the children back to Wales with him, he could not find Bill or his two brothers. All the families that took the children upon the death of their parents moved from Buck Run..The neighbors would not tell the Uncle where they moved.Charlie and Maggie moved to Diener's Hill, near St. Clair, Pa.
Her second child was a girl Sylvia Eschelman (biological parent's surname).Sylvia's mother died, but her father may have still been living. She had anolder sister, who kept in touch in later years. This sister lived in Reading, Pa. .Maggie found her through her church, the Reformed church in St. Clair, Pa.
Her youngest son, Charlie, was her son, Bill's, son.Bill's first marriage ended in divorce.Bill had custody of the child and when he went to Mexico to fight in the cavalry, during the Mexican war, his son bonded with his grandmother.Upon his return, and a second marriage,it was decided that he would remain with his grandmother and grandfather,so they adopted him also.Maggie lived until an good old age in the best of health and was a loved and respected Matriarch of the family.
She lived alone in the old homestead and cared for her home and finances herself to the day she died. Her death occurred when she fell down her steps and broke her neck, got up and walked outside to call for a neighbor to help, was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries. She became hard of hearing in old age, and wore a hearing aid that she turned off if she didn't like what you said. She was a very patient person, to whom nurturing seemed to come naturally. Until her death, she still remained a very religious person, and would spendfrom 12:00 noon to 3:00 praying on her knees, every Good Friday. She still had an icebox, with a window box for food and an outhouse in the 1950's.She still curled hair with the coal oil lamp curling iron in the late 1940's, and had to be convinced to get electric lights in the home.Every Saturday she polished the old black stove in the kitchen, and took her bath in the wooden tub in the kitchen.
