I am looking for information about Catharine/Catherine RINEHART/Reinhart/Rhinehart/Reinhardt who was born ca. 1820 in France-- most likely Alsace. She immigrated to the U.S., and eventually located in St. Joseph County, Indiana. She first married a Peter or Pierre SCHLEMMER/Schlimmer/Slimmer/Slemmer. Catherine later married Jacob/Jacques MITCHEL/Michel/Mitchele/Mitchell, who died prior to 1880. Peter, Catherine and their children are listed as "Slimer" in the 1850 St. Joseph Co., IN census. http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/in/stjoseph/1850/pg00262.txt The youngest child listed in 1850 is probably a "George W." who later went by the name William because his younger half-brother was named "George." "William" Schlemmer lists "Catherine Rhinehart" and "Peter Schlemmer" as his parents in the Marshall County Marriage Index (Marshall Co., IN). The blended Schlemmer/Mitchel family shows up in the 1860 & 1870 census under "Mitchel". In one of the census years the "Schlemmers" are spelled "Slemer" and TRANSCRIBED as "Tlemer" ! so those children would easily be lost if you didn't know who you are looking for. Peter and Catherine had three sons: John Schlemmer Jacob Schlemmer (George?) William Schlemmer Catherine Rhinehart Schlemmer married Jacob Mitchel (b. ca. 1804) sometime before 1853. They had three children: Christena Mitchel (m. George Washington SCHLEMMER) b. 1 june 1853 d. 25 Apr 1830 George Mitchel (m. Margaret ZIMMER) b. 15 Feb 1855 d. 25 Apr 1941 Sophia Mitchel Jacob/Jacques MITCHEL/Michel/Mitchell/Mitchele died prior to 1880. In the 1880 census, Catherine's son, Jacob Schlemmer is incorrectly listed as "Jacob Mitchell." Catherine Mitchel lived next door to her oldest son, John SCHLEMMER (listed as "Schlimmer" in the census) Household Record 1880 United States Census Cathrine MITCHELL Self W Female W 60 FRANCE FRANCE FRANCE George MITCHELL Son S Male W 23 IN Farmer FRANCE FRANCE Jacob MITCHELL Son S Male W 32 IN Farmer FRANCE FRANCE Source Information: Census Place Madison, St. Joseph, Indiana Family History Library Film 1254309 NA Film Number T9-0309 Page Number 521D Household Record 1880 United States Census John SCHLIMMER Self M Male W 38 IN FRANCE FRANCE Rebeck SCHLIMMER Wife M Female W 32 OH PA PA Jacob F. I don't know who Jacob Mitchel's first wife may have been or when & where they got married. I'm not sure where & when Jacob Mitchel came to the U.S., but there is evidence that he immigrated from Alsace, France or from Germany. There is evidence that suggests that the Reinhart/Rhinehart, Schlemmer, and Mitchel lines may have all come through the Fort Wayne/Allen County, IN area before settling in the St. Joseph Co./ Marshall Co., IN area. I also don't have any info. about when or where Peter Schlemmer & Catherine RINEHART/REINHARDT/RHINEHART got married or exactly when Peter Schlemmer died. By the 1880 census, Catherine RINEHART/REINHARDT/RHINEHART Schlemmer Mitchel was a widow again. Catharine/Catherine RINEHART/REINHARDT/RHINEHART Schlemmer MITCHEL died 5 June 1897 in Madison Township, St. Joseph Co, IN Catharine RINEHART/REINHARDT/RHINEHART may have come to Indiana via Stark Co, Ohio (the Canton area). She may have also lived in and around Allen County, Indiana: Fort Wayne & Monroeville areas. In fact, Peter/Pierre Schlemmer & Catharine Rinehart may have been married in Allen Co., IN. Any help you can provide about Catharine Reinhardt/Rinehart/Reinhart/Rhinehart, her parents, siblings, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sarah Notify Administrator about this message?
