Benjamin Max Reinhardt, a well-known area lawyer who provided pro bono work to valley seniors and was an avid sailor, has died. He was 86.

Reinhardt, of Palm Desert and Seal Beach died Feb. 21, 2004, in Santa Ana of congestive heart failure and kidney disease.

He was born Dec. 29, 1917, to Max and Miriam Reinhardt in New York.

He married Rosa Gonzalez Guerra in a private ceremony on July 16, 2000, in Idyllwild. The couple then recited vows before friends and family in a wedding ceremony on Nov. 4, 2000.

Reinhardt graduated first in his class at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1957.

He then opened a firm with classmate Robert Caution in Van Nuys and practiced law until August 2003.

Reinhardt?s professional accomplishments include admission to practice before the United States Supreme Court, service on the Board of Northridge Hospital in the San Fernando Valley and service as an arbitrator for the Riverside County Courts.

Reinhardt also was active in the senior community in the Coachella Valley, even though, as daughter Dixie Reinhardt said with a laugh, "He never admitted he was a senior himself."

Reinhardt provided pro bono legal assistance to seniors throughout the valley through the La Quinta Senior Center, as well as many other volunteer activities, including active membership in the Elks Club.

He also taught law at the University of Southern California and lectured on personal legal issues on more than 20 Princess Cruise Line trips around the world.

An avid sailor for many years, Reinhardt served as commodore of the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club from 1983 to 1984.

He was also an exhibition ballroom dancer in his youth and a frequent golfer in recent years.

Reinhardt is survived by his wife, Rosa; two daughters, Sara Ali of Burke, Va., and Dixie Reinhardt of New York; an adopted daughter, Shawn Simone of Woodland Hills; four stepdaughters, Elizabeth Coles of Modesto, Rosanna Vega of Salinas, Barbara Godoy of Alta Loma and Ophelia Warren of Fontana; his son, Dennis Reinhardt of Palo Alto; his stepson, George Guerra of Durham; his sister, Esther Ciccone of Monmouth Beach, N.J.; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Religious Science Church of the Desert, 45-630 Portola Ave. in Palm Desert, where Reinhardt was a member.
