There is a family in McDowell Co., NC 1850 with Sarah, age 57, b. NC as head; in the household are Andy H., 18; Samuel, 15; Patton, 12 and Sarah J., 10; all born in NC. Believe this is part of what you might be looking for, even if the age does not fit exactly.
I looked on Ancestry and did see some family files for Andrew Homer Reed, listing his parents as Sarah Reed/Sarah McGee. A little further down there were a couple of family listings that had his parents as "Samuel" Reed and Sarah McGee. I did not verify these except to try to check the 1840 census.
On Wikipedia it says that McDowell Co., NC was formed in 1842 from parts of Burke and Rugherford Counties. There is a listing of a family in "West of North Fork, Burke Co., NC" in 1840 that ancestry picks up as "Saml Ruo" that someone has corrected to read "Saml Reed"; writing looks like "reeg" almost to me, but they did their "d's" back then with a squiggle down sometimes. If you look at the household, and the one on 1850, it could to be the same family. The only other family listed on the 1840 census in Rutherford or Burke Co that I saw having a son 10-14 was a William in Rutherford Co. Remember ages were not always accurate on the census.
Is there a possibility of getting a death certificate for Andrew Homer? Most states started doing death certificates around 1910. Don't recall just when you said he died. Sometimes the death certificate contains that info.
