A biography of Edmund W. Reid is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 821 and 822. Edmund was born, 19 Sep 1856, second of nine children of James and Eliza Jane (Weir) Reid. James, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, was born, 1825, Province of Quebec, Canada, and as a young man went into the wilderness of Canada, cleared the woods for a farm, and spent his life as a farmer & stockman. James died in 1902 & Eliza Jane died in 1919, age 96. Edmund spent his boyhood in Canada, where he was educated, worked on the farm, and began to learn the carpenter's trade. At age 17, he went to New York State and worked as a carpenter apprentice. In 1882, Edmund was back in Winnipeg employed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad building stations and other work. In 1883, he went to Rat Portage, Ontario, and the following summer did carpentry work. From 1884-1889, he was in Minneapolis, MN. In 1888 he first visited Montana, laying out the tasks of carpenters at Fort Assinniboine. In 1890, Edmund came to Great Falls, MT, and developed a general building and contracting business. He spent most of 1891 in Havre, MT, where he built the Palace Hotel, the Hotel Rivers, and a drug store. In 1894, he organized the Black Eagle Carriage Company at Great Falls and became president of that thriving industry. In 1912, he filed a homestead claim in Teton County and operated a 320 acre ranch, raising horses and cattle. On 25 Aug 1891, Great Falls, MT, Edmund married Addie Steele, born near Buffalo, NY. Children: Maud (died in infancy), Ethel. Edmund W. Reid died, 12 Aug 1940, age 86. Addie Reid died, 12 Oct 1935, age 77. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
