Hi Wendy.
Thanks very much for your message. "My" Maggie Reid is indeed the lady in the August 26, 1874 entry, and I appreciate your efforts in locating it. :)
At this point, I'm working backwards in time and am eager to find out more about Maggie's siblings and parents and their ancestry. I think my next step will be to find Joseph Reid's death and/or that of his wife, Isabella (I found an 1878 death registration for an Isabella Reid, but I'm not sure whether it's the right Isabella - see below). Other options might be to look for marriages of Maggie's siblings to see whether there are any clues as to the family's past.
Unfortunately the 1871 census shows Joseph, widower. The 1874 city directory shows Maggie and my g-grandfather living at the home of Isabella Reid, widow of Joseph (the 1874 marriage registration shows the parents as Joseph and Isabella). Hmm.. A bit perplexing.
My own surname has been much easier to research, but finding Reids will take a little more wherewithal I think. :)
Thanks again.
