Hi - Was your grandmother born a Messina? One thing you might try is to go to your library (if they have access to Ancestry.com or Heritagequestonline) or a Family History Center and try the 1900 census. Check out the Florences or Charles under age 10 in Lehigh County, Allentown, Pennsylvania, if she was put in foster at a later age. You don't have to put in a surname. Good luck!
