our Rehm Family in the U.S.
A little bit ov background, if it will help. The Rehm family originated in the State of Bavaria, in Germany. Though today the name is common throughout Bavaria, the city of Augsburg is regarded as the ancestoral home. The name in the Bavarian dialect( which marches to quite a different drummer than other dialects of German) is pronounced REEM. In non-Bavarian German dialects it is pronounced Raym. The majority of families in the U.S. pronounce it in the Bavarian tradition( but don't always know why!). A fewuse the direct English phonetic and say "REM", though this makes the rest of us feel like someone just scraped their fingernails on a blackboard. My family arrived in the early 1800's with the "von" prefex attatched, therefore appearing as "von Rehm". The crest of our family is a bull on a yellow background, signifing our Augsburg roots. There is also a royal crest from the Bavarian city of Nuernburg, Regretfully, I don't recall what it displays, however they are related.
Our family dropped the "von" prefex upon arival, and hence, my blood is today only red. My Father, Robert Charles Rehm fought in the U.S. Army during World War Two. He earneda Bronze Star and a Silver Star for valor. In the beginning he was against a war that pitted him against his ancestors, however once the U.S. commited he enlisted and was put into officers training. He was a forward observer in the Battle of the Bulge and went right through to the Elbe River where he encountered the Russians raping and pillaging Germany. As Senior officer he met with the senior Russian officer and informed him that anything mooving across the Elbe River would be blown back to Moscow. The U.S. high command werent exactly happy with his diplomacy, but the incidents stopped immediatly. Prior to that he liberated a concentration camp, where upon he fully realized the nessessity of the war. Both he and my mother, Lillian Connolly Rehm are retired. Like most Bavarians our strain is Catholic.
