Here's my latest update on the Reffitt line - we must be careful to document our findings, as there is much out on the internet that is falsely connected.
Descendants of Christopher Reffitt
Generation No. 1
1.CHRISTOPHER1 REFFITT was born 1750 in France.
Child of CHRISTOPHER REFFITT is:
2. i. JAMES2 REFFITT, b. Abt. 1784, Virginia, USA; d. June 01, 1858, Montgomery County, Kentucky, USA.
Generation No. 2
2.JAMES2 REFFITT (CHRISTOPHER1) was born Abt. 1784 in Virginia, USA, and died June 01, 1858 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, USA.He married NANCY WILLS July 18, 1814 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, USA, daughter of WILLIAM WILLS and MARY BALLARD.She was born Abt. 1792 in Pennsylvania, USA, and died May 07, 1877 in Montgomery County, KY.
Notes for JAMES REFFITT:
I think we need to focus on the earliest names - Christopher Reffitt, born abt 1750 (that's a very rough estimate based on the early census records); and the other Reffitt men found in the 1810 and 1820 census for Montgomery County.Specifically ANY probate, wills, marriage, birth, or court records would be extremely helpful.
1800 Tax Rolls for Kentucky:
Christopher Reffett is recorded in Madison County, tax list date is 10/1/1800.Is there other information on that tax roll besides a name and a date?
REFFITTS TO FOLLOW UP ON:
1810 Census for Montgomery County:
Shows 2 Reffitts:
Samuel Reffitt, total of 5 people in household including Samuel who is between 16-25; he has one female (likely his wife) age 26-44; and three young daughters under 10.NO SONS.
Christopher Reffitt, total of 6 people in household including Christopher who I am not sure of his age. There is one male age 45 and over and one female age 45 and over. There is one male age 16-25; and 3 males aged 10-15.So if Christopher is the father of our James (b. 1784) then Christopher is the older male and quite possibly also the father of the Samuel in the different household noted above; at this point, only the probate records will solidify any assumptions on this family.
1820 Census for Montgomery County:
Christopher Reffitt is still there, age 45 and over; with his wife, also age 45 and over. But all the children are gone, they are the only people in the household.
I found 6 more Reffitt households in the 1820 Census:
John Reffitt, age 26-45; wife age 16-26; and 2 boys under 10.
Daniel Reffitt, age 16-26; wife age 16-26; one son under 10; and 2 daughters under 10.
James Reffitt, age 16-26; wife age 16-26; 2 sons under 10; and one daughter under 10.This is consistent with the 1850 census and our list of children for James and Nancy, except the daughter. This may be the Fanny that was talked about or another daughter who died before the next census.
Samuel Reffitt, age 26-45; wife age 26-45; 2 daughters under 10; one daughter age 10-16.(This puts him having at least 5 daughters now and no sons from 1810-1820).
John Reffitt, age 26-45; wife age 26-45; 3 daughters under 10; one daughter age 10-16.
Joseph Reffitt, age 16-26; wife age 16-26; 3 daughters under 10.
All are involved in Agriculture except Christopher (obviously retired). You can see that there are TWO John Reffitts on this census - So it is more likely than before that Christopher had a brother or cousin who also bore children and named them with similar naming patterns.Again, the only sure way to tell which children were Christopher's and which were not, would be to locate probate records.Samuel or the older John could very well be Christopher's brother and either could very well be his son - something to continue watching for.Another thing, since Christopher's sons are all out of the house now, would be to look for any marriage or birth records between 1810 and 1820 in Montgomery County that would possibly involve his sons and his grandchildren. If these are all his sons, his heart must have been bursting to see all these weddings and births in a ten year span!!
1830 Census for Montgomery County
We have a new name showing up, David Reffitt, age 26-40; wife age 26-40; 3 sons under 5; one son age 5-10; one son age 10-15; 3 daughters under 5; and one daughter age 10-15.That's a lot of kids under 5, and unless they have twins going on, all of these kids can't belong to one couple. My guess is that they are raising someone else's kids - another reason for a trip to a courthouse. It is possible that David was a distant cousin from Virginia or another state who came because of a death in the family.
Samuel Reffitt shows up again, with his wife, 4 daughters and now two sons under 10.
And in 1830 James Reffitt is still in this place, with wife, one daughter age 5-10, and 6 sons.
1840 Census for Montgomery County:
James Reffitt is found, and according to his other records he would be about 56 years old now.The census shows one male age 50-60.Nancy, born about 1798 would be about 42, and the census shows one female age 30-40 (chalk it up to census error). There are 4 other males - one 20-30 (Derret or Levi); three 10-15(likely Henry, James, and Amos); two 5-10 (John and William); and one under 5 (Thomas); four females - one 30-40 (Nancy); two 15-20 (Fanny? And ? maybe a cousin was living with them?); and one under 5 (Lucinda).
1850 Census for Montgomery County:
James Reffitt is found at age 66; wife Nancy age 53; Amos, age 27; William, age 23; Thomas age 17; John age 14; and Lucinda age 11.
1860 Census for Montgomery County:
Nancy is found, age 68; Amos, age 35; Lucinda, age 19; and there is a Hugh Cain, age 40 (no relation stated) and a baby girl, Sally Reffitt, age one month.Amos is listed as "idiot" so maybe he was mentally retarded.
Next door to Nancy is James and Elizabeth with their two children Wm. And Mandy.
Revolutionary War Service Records, 1775-83
There's quite a few Riffitt's who served. The name is not spelled exactly, but we can all agree that the name changed spelling over the years. There are several C Riffitt's, any one of them could be Christopher, they all seem to be in the same roll box, #130.But what sticks out to me (even though it could mean absolutely nothing) is a Couste Rapit, volunteer for the Continental Troops, roll box 116.I think Couste is French for Christopher. The online record is just an index, it gives the name, rank, and roll box number, which can be used to find the actual jacket in the National Archives. The NA charges about $27 for the entire imaged set, but it takes 4-6 months to deliver. This file includes lots of data valuable to a genealogist. There is also data (if given) that mentions the wife, parents, other family members who served, where they lived at time of induction, where they discharged to, and where they settled after they served. There will be information on pensions and grants in that file as well, so it's a very valuable piece of information to get hold of.I can't order it, I tried, so if anyone knows how to access it would be appreciated.

Notes for WILLIAM REFFITT:
birthplace comes from George's marriage record.Even though he states he was born in Menifee County, it was actually Montgomery County he was born in, as Menifee did not become a county until 1869.So he was stating the name of the new county on his marriage record.

===========================
Story handed down thru relatives:
Charles shot Marie in the 1920's after finding her in bed with the neighbor Henry Tolvee. This story was told to Dianne Reffitt (McLean) by Loretta Reffitt, Russell Reffitt's last wife.Loretta wasn't sure if it was true because Marie lived on after the divorce and even remarried. Additionally, Robert Reffitt (Dianne's father) confirmed the story, but he thought that Charlie had killed Marie and the other man.
A newspaper article was located by Roger Overholts (Janet Reffitt's son) that explained the story.
Apparently, Charles was some sort of bookie and Henry was mixed up in it somehow.Henry had written some love letters to Marie, which Charlie had found hidden in a box in the closet. One day when Charlie was supposed to be doing his business, he supposed that he would find Henry with his wife and sure enough he did find them together when he walked in the house. He shot them both.Henry died, but Marie lived through it.When Charlie appeared before the judge, he pled not guilty and showed the letters to the judge who said, "well, I guess you are right, then, you run on home now Charlie."He got off scott free, and he and Marie divorced.Charlie later married Zelda Bowling. The two boys lived with Charlie and Zelda, and the two girls went to live with Marie.
NOTE:Neighbor in 1920 shown on the census record is Henry Tolbea.
