Linda,
I am a Reeves descendant but in my maternal line there was much oral history indicating that my gggrandmother was of native american ancestry.
About 5 years ago I participated in the Genographic Project purely to resolve the native american issue, but my mtDNA was Haplogroup H - European. At that point, I decided there must not be any truth to the native american theory.
Several years later a distant cousin contacted me thru Ancestry and added additional oral family history plus a surname that her grandfather had written in the bible he gave her as a high school graduation gift as well as his description of our mutual gggrandmother as being native american in appearance. About two hours later, I had found our gggrandmother's cherokee mother in the census with her european husband and listed by her cherokee name.
I have no idea why her DNA is european other than the possibility of a female white captive in her maternal lineage, but she is definitely native american.
