This is a fascinating question.

My Andrew Reed family em. in the early 1700s from Antrim, Ireland and settled in Maine in 1730. I have always searched under REED; however, I just found a marriage record for Andrew Reed's son, Andrew and the spelling was REID. I checked the 1790 census for Lincoln County, Maine and found names spelled as REID. Somewhere along the line, they changed the spelling to REED, but I've now learned to check under both spellings.
