I am a great-grandson of Pinckney Reed (by his 3rd wife; Clarissa Peeples was his first wife) and have Pinckney's Family Bible. In it he lists the following on Clarissa:
"P. Reed and Clarissa M. Peeples was joined in wedlock on Thursday evening the 9th of May 1833 by Rev. Henry Tatum all of North Carolina."
"Clarisa M. Reed Wife of P. Reed departed this Life on Lords day Evening at 4 Oclock Decr 17th 1854.She was Entrd at Oakland Ten.She Kept the Faith is now Safe with the Redeamer.Tho Lost to Sight to Memory dear."
"The Funeral of my dear Clarissa was Preached by the Rev. I.L. Cross from the 19 chapter 8 and 9 verces of Revilation at Oakland [Tenn] on the 4 Lords day in Feby 1855.It was a verry Cold day."
I have seen Clarissa's tombstone in the old cemetery at Oakland, Tennessee, where this burial took place.
I have a good bit of information on Pinckney's ancestors going back to his grandfather Hugh Reed, who was born in Chester County, PA, in 1745 and moved to Rockingham County, NC, around 1782, where he was a farmer. He has been certified by the DAR as a Revolutionary War patriot. His parents were apparently Scots-Irish immigrants, although I have not been able to confirm their names.Pinckney's father was John Reed, born in Baltimore County, Maryland. He was also a farmer in Rockingham County.
Pinckney married Clarissa on May 9, 1833 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was from nearby Rockingham County, NC.They moved sometime in the next few years to Fayette County, Tennessee, near Oakland.Pinckney deeded the land for the Baptist Church there. He and Clarissa are listed in the 1850 Census of Fayette County along with two of their children, John P. age 14, and Priscilla age 5.Both children are list as born in Tennessee, so they must have moved there by 1836.Pinckney's occupation is listed as "farmer".Clarissa is listed as being from North Carolina, so I would assume she was born in Guilford County.Unfortunately, I don't know anything about her parents.
After Clarissa's death in February 1855, Pinckney married Cynthia A. Barker in Somerville, TN.Cynthia was from Wake County, NC.She died in January, 1858.
Pinckney then married Jennie Benitha Wharton (my great-grandmother) in Somerville, TN. on Sept. 23, 1858.She was the daughter of Evans Wharton and Eleanor McMurray of Guilford County, NC.They had three children who lived.Jennie died August 14, 1866.Pinckney built the Eagle Hotel in Somerville sometime during this period. He later moved to Iuka, Mississippi, where he eventually married Fannie V. Dillworth Warren, also originally from Guilford County, NC.Pinckney died July 6, 1893 and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Iuka.
I have one old photograph of Pinckney taken at an advanced age, and I also have his violin that he signed "P. Reed, 1810".That signature matches the handwriting in the Bible.I hope this is helpful. Please send me any information you find on Clarissa's parents.
