William Henry Redwood Jr was the third child of William Henry and Louisa Virginia Browne Anderson Redwood, born in Norfolk, Va on March 21, 1832, and a descendant of John Redwood, who was born in Barbados on February 5, 1661 and migrated to Norfolk, Va in 1693 and subsequently to colonial Williamsburg in 1702, where he was the first gaoler and keeper of the capitol building and ran an "ordinary" on the Capitol Square (now restored as the Blue Bell Inn). John's father, also John Redwood, apparently arrived in Barbados (itself founded as a Crown Colony in 1625)from England (presumably Bristol, as there were a number of Redwoods in and around that city in the first half of the 1600s, including Robert Redwood, founder of the first public library in England there in 1613)in 1638, where he died in 1668. William Henry Redwood Jr. moved with his parents to Mobile in 1836.

This and much more information on William Henry Redwood Jr. and his Redwood ancestors and descendants is contained in a well-researched family history by the late Richard B. Redwood Jr. entitled "The Redwood Family of Mobile: The Record of a Large Family in a Deep South Community during the 19th Century, with Family Group Records," published by Willowbrook Press (P.O. Box 8193), Mobile, Alabama (36689), 1993, Library of Congress Catalogue Card No.: 93-61021.
