Of possible interest to this discussion:
Leander Redmond, 19, described as "mulatto" or mixed race, was listed in the 1850 census of Macon County, N.C. He was living in the household of Sarah Jennings, 51. She was the widow of Thomas Jennings. Leander was a laborer.
Sarah also owned two slaves, a 25-year-old black woman and a 7-year-old black girl.
I don't know if it means anything, but Sarah was the daughter of John and Sarah Ammons. In the 1830 and 1840 censuses, the Ammons household included a young free person of color -- a female age 10-24 in 1830, and a female age 5-10 in 1840.
Also, in 1860, John Redmond, 25, mulatto, was living in the household of James Frady, 20. They were next door to James Jennings.
