I currently don't know anything more about the John Smith who married Sally Redman.I note, however, that a John Smith also married an Elizabeth Wollard in Richmond Co., VA in April 1781, with a Samuel Wollard as bondsman.I have no idea if this was the same John Smith who married Sally Redman about three years later in 1784 (when a Thomas Dobyns was the bondsman).Chances are that these were two different men named John Smith...but who knows?
I also note that a John Redman, Junior married a Maria C. Smith in March 1807 in Richmond Co., VA, and consent was given by a William Smith who was listed as the guardian of the bride. The bondsman for this marriage was Alfred Beale and the witness was Edwin C. Brann.Back in February 1805, a Martha C. Smith had married a William McGuier, and consent was given by her mother Winnie Smith (with a William Smith as the witness and a James Reynolds as bondsman).
I would not be too surprised if the above Maria C. Smith and the above Martha C. Smith were related (and maybe even sisters...but all of this is just an "educated guess" at this point). Also, the William Smith who was a witness for the earlier wedding in 1805 (for Martha C. Smith) and who was the guardian mentioned in the record for the later wedding in 1807 (for Maria C. Smith) MAY very well have been the same man...and maybe the girls' mother, Mrs. Winnie Smith, had died by 1807 when the second wedding was held.....but just a lot of speculation here).MAYBE the "C" middle initial for both women stood for "Colston" (from the John Smith of Richmond Co., VA who had married Mary Colston by the 1730s).
There was a woman named Winnie Howe (daughter of George Howe and his wife Mary Landman) who married an unknown Mr. Smith (per a "chart" on RootsWeb World Connect). They apparently had a daughter who was also named Winnie Smith, and marriage records show that this daughter named Miss Winnie Smith married a Henry Sisson in Feb 1787 in Richmond Co., VA (I don't know what happened to this couple). The Mrs. Winnie Smith who was the mother of the Martha C. Smith who married in 1805, however, MAY have been a different/later/younger Mrs. Winnie Smith versus Mrs. Winnie (Howe) Smith, based on the amount of time that had expired between when Miss Winnie Smith married Henry Sisson in 1787 and when Miss Martha C. Smith married William McGuier in 1805.
If I ever learn anything else that might help you, I will certainly post it here.
