Oh my gosh, I think you have found my needle in a hay stack!I have: Edward Redfern b. 1814 Betley, Staffs., England, d. 1890 Owen Sound, Ont. m. in 1840 to Emma Watkin b. Jan. 13, 1822, Newport, Salop, England and d. 1890 in Owen Sound, Ont. The dates are off from yours but look at these childrens dates. William Watkin 1841-1904 m. Eliza McNelly, Frances Mary 1843-1895m. William Ward, James Thomas Robertson 1846-1902, John Wesley 1849-1914 m. Jane Ferguson, Peter Edward 1852--- m. 1)Elby Burns 2) Burns, Emma Louise 1855-1914 m. William Wolfe, and David R. 1857-1920 m. 1)Jennie Boyle,2) Martha Drew. Five of these children had families. Now for the fun!!! My great-grandmother, was Jennette Elizabeth Robertson b. 1878 in Galt (now Cambridge, Ont). When James Thomas moved to Hebron twp., Cheboygan County , Mich. he or the family changed the last name from Redfern to Robertson. I do not know if any of the other boys moved to Mich. I do know that James did move his family there. Jennette was 5 yrs old when they moved from Galt. I have a listing of the children of the siblings of James Thomas Robertson if you are interested. Jennette E. Robertson m. John T. Myers in 1904/5 in Hebron twp, Mich.
This name change is correct. My mother, Vivian (Myers) Shappell b. Sept. 12, 1913 in Hebron twp., died Oct. 26, 2002 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. I have been writing a book with her. Gathering information over the past 6 years while we have been up there. (I live in Fl.) Anyway, she remembered only that there was "something fishy" about the name being changed. Another aunt that I talked with also confirmed the name change. I also have from T. R. Murray, Box 132, Owen Sound, Ont. an ancestor chart showing the name change. T. R. Murray did his research in July 1982. I believe he is related to our family but can not confirm that. (He may not still be living.)
Your b. and d. dates for Edward and Emma are not the same as mine but the last 5 children are right on! Do you think this could possibly be the same family? What documentation do you have? Can't help but wonder why they changed their name, what could have happened to make them do this? I have yet to get more research done. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I am anxious to hear from you. Thank you sooooo much for making this post over two years ago!
Sincerely, Janet (Shappell) Eward
