Martha Elizabeth Redding Lee
BATON ROUGE, LA - Martha Elizabeth Redding Lee, a retired architect, passed away peacefully in Baton Rouge, LA on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009. Professionally and affectionately known as "Betty," she was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Shreveport. She was the daughter of Maj. Gen. Joseph A. and Mary Byrd Redding and the granddaughter of Clifton Ellis Byrd Sr., for whom Shreveport's C.E. Byrd High School is named. She had numerous cherished memories of growing up with her family and friends in Shreveport and of her years at Byrd High, where she graduated in 1936. In her last year at LSU in Baton Rouge, she met her future husband, Frank Cayce Lee of Memphis, Tenn. They were married in 1940, at First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport. During World War II, she worked in the war effort in the manufacture of B-29 bombers in California. After the war, upon return to Baton Rouge, she pursued a career in architecture. Working as a draftsperson, she studied for and passed, in 1955, the state architectural licensing exam. She was one of the first women licensed as an architect in the state and was the first woman member of the Baton Rouge chapter of the AIA. She loved her profession and had a long and varied career. She was predeceased by her parents, Gen. and Mrs. J.A. Redding; her sister, Mary Byrd Nadler; and her husband of 38 years, F. Cayce Lee. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Byrd Ray and son-in-law Kent Ray, of Baton Rouge; sons, Cayce Redding Lee, Clayton, Ga., Clifton Monroe Lee and daughter-in-law, Martha Cox Lee, of Leesburg, Va.; and grandchildren, Dr. Keren E. Ray and Julia Ray, of Baton Rouge, Alexander DeBreard Lee, Chicago, IL and Rebecca Redding Lee, New York, NY. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Forest Park Cemetery in Shreveport.
